A Dark Song plot

"Not everything can be forgiven."

Young Sophia insists on renting an old house in the countryside so she can hire the occultist Solomon. She needs this for the Abramelin, a ritual to summon her guardian angel so that her wish can be granted: to see her murdered child again. As Sophia and Solomon begin the ritual and are drawn deeper and deeper into it, they risk turning against each other or going insane. However, when Solomon discovers that Sophia has not been honest, there is a greater danger. The two discover that they are not alone in the dark house.

Vague occult film that never managed to grab me very well. A ritual is supposedly followed, but it is all but with the wet finger it seems. Well, I've never really been a fan of occult films. As usual, I was a bit amazed at the high scores of some. Obviously I didn't like it much. However, I don't think it's the soundtrack because it seemed fine to me.

The actors didn't suit me, I can say that, quite annoying people especially that perverted guy Solomon. In the end, Gavin tries to save the film by throwing some demons at it. Oh well.. I also didn't like the setting. I quickly got tired of it. I wouldn't describe this movie as a horror. Seems to me rather for a limited audience of which I unfortunately also became a member. Another hour and a half wasted

Warning to all Moviemeters!

Don't watch this movie unless you want to throw away 100 minutes of your life and never get it back.

'A Dark Song' starts slowly, with 2 protagonists. Steve Oram who is very unpleasant to watch and listen to. The dialogues - and certainly his monologues - are sadly bad and also boring.

Susan Loughnane's motives remain vague and implausible. I struggled through this 'movie' for 100 minutes. Hoping for some action or something worthwhile. But alas, nothing happens.

Also in the second part of the film there is no tension, bad effects, almost no events. Only to be fobbed off in the finale with a wafer-thin 'moral message'.

If I had seen this in the cinema I would have asked for my money back.

Separate.

A Dark Song takes an occult use that we know from countless other films, but manages to give it an elaborate, down-to-earth approach. Summoning demons is a drawn-out, detailed and demanding process that has to be spread out over months, and it has rarely been presented in such an empathetic realistic way.

It's great how the gravitas of the company is gradually built up. The seriousness is always underlined by occult expert and drill sergeant Solomon, and together with the prepared, but not very transparent Sophia, they weightily go through the many rituals, accompanied by a wonderful soundtrack, which alternates ominous strings with equally restless ambient hum.

Gradually, circles are drawn and candles are lit, making it more like what we know. It takes a long time before something tangible actually happens, a notion that also causes the necessary doubt in Sophia, in which the film again invests a bit unnecessarily.

The denouement is also different than usual, but in contrast to the meticulous construction, it did not fully appeal to me. Not exactly a break in style, but also not the mystical pay-off you hope for. Atmospheric individuality, but the feeling that there had been something better prevails with me. 3.5*
