Corruption in the church has existed at all times and in all places and this film is a good example of that. Gael Garcia Bernal is one of those actors that I almost always like. Here too he manages to convince as the young priest, who at a certain point can no longer suppress his feelings for the beautiful Ana.

Although the script could have been a bit sharper here and there, it remains credible at all times. The fact that Ana is an incredibly beautiful woman/girl is certainly a prerequisite for this. The soundtrack is also very strong at times. It sounds very Mexican, but it fits in well.

Quite a good film, which once again dares to criticize the priests and bishops and also the church itself. Something that I can usually appreciate.

3.5*

Disappointing, especially because the film looks much older than it actually is; I had estimated him to be at least ten years older. The subject is of course very juicy and even shocking for Mexicans. We see a lot of hypocrisy, and I can even have some sympathy for the main character, who seems to be struggling with everything that is happening. I don't care much for the institution of the church and the many rules of the church that he breaks are not my rules. What I also see is something that often occurs: two young people suffer from a little too much hormones, after which the girl becomes pregnant. This is often undesirable, after which an abortion follows, often at the insistence of the boy (which is of course not okay). If in a country where this is prohibited, this is often risky. The fact that in the case of this film the boy is a priest makes little difference to me. He's not even hypocritical about it, because he indicates even before the events take place that he doesn't really believe in celibacy. More interesting is the role of his mentor, who is a lot more hypocritical and also seems to have ties to the cartels, while another priest who opposes the cartels is excommunicated.

In short, I think this film is particularly arousing commotion because it concerns a priest. The plot ultimately seems rather tepid to me, it's all a bit too easy. The film certainly has fascinating moments, but overall I feel like the commotion about it is a bit overblown. 1.5*.

Not for the first time, celibacy is being scrutinized under the director's table. But even more unorthodox things happened in the small village, somewhere in Mexico. Under the guise of being a good believer, go to confession on time, but actually just continue with the sin as if it were nothing. But with the idea of lecturing others.

Not a bad film, but a bit annoying at times and some strange characters. I also have the impression that a lot is made of various subplots and events after events. It seemed a bit chaotic.

Slightly too simple, without nuance or space to develop ideas or reflections. The deeply emotional decisions that were made were taken too quickly.
