In a Savage Land plot

Late 1930s. Two newlywed anthropologists, Phillip and Evelyn, travel to an archipelago off the coast of Papua New Guinea to conduct fieldwork. Their relationship sours when it turns out that Philip is only using their research for his own academic ambitions. With the help of a pearl merchant, Mick, Evelyn sails to another island to continue her research. She falls in love with Mick. Meanwhile, war breaks out in the Pacific and their island is threatened by a Japanese invasion.
