Cracks plot

"Innocence isn't lost. It's taken."

A British elite boarding school for girls, in 1934; Miss G. is a teacher and embodies everything the girls desire: she disregards rules, smokes and is one lump of sensuality. She even wears pants sometimes! Miss G. is determined to teach the girls a little more than the strict rules of their living environment. She wants to let them live and think for themselves, which she stimulates, among other things, by inducing parties and an erotic freedom. The girls are overjoyed with their free-thinking teacher. But cracks start to appear in the relationship when some girls feel threatened in the power structure and a beautiful new Spanish arrives.

What a relief and delight to come across these kinds of films! What a beautiful story!

It's certainly a long journey, but more than worth it; you quickly get swept up in the small, the subliminal. There's no escaping the hormonal surges of a group of girls, and a teacher, in seclusion. And there's especially no escaping it at that age. The unrest, the longing, the love and hate... everything rages through their bodies and wants to burst forth. Especially when that uneasy balance is disturbed by an intruder; everything that contradicts itself seems to focus on it, and converge.

What wonderful acting.

Definitely see again!

3.5 *

Great. Definitely starring two of my favorite actresses (Eva Green and the mysterious Juno Temple), but also with a nice atmosphere, and despite the somewhat clichéd parts (the new girl isn't liked by the group's boss), I wasn't bothered. There are also some really beautiful scenes, especially that night swimming. However, I don't always find Green's role convincing, mainly because her coming out is rather sudden at the end and isn't fully developed. Especially her relationship with/toward the Spanish girl doesn't really come across as a result. Valverde, of course, has the disadvantage of having to speak English and doesn't come across as entirely convincing, but she is very pleasant to watch. 3.5 stars.

What a strange genre boarding school movies are. They mostly come from England, or otherwise the USA. And they're always about groups of boys, or in this case, girls, being bullied and humiliated. Just how it always is, or was, there. There must be so much frustration among many English and American people. At least, that's what I'm led to believe. I have absolutely no connection to it. But luckily, I've never had to experience it in person. The films are almost all the same, from what I've seen. With the aforementioned elements of bullying, humiliation, and pecking orders. Although this film was even stranger. Besides the fact that it turned into a kind of horror film towards the end—I was actually waiting for Miss G. to get glowing eyes or turn into a zombie or, even better, start sucking blood from the girls' necks, there were also occasional inappropriate and illogical erotic elements. Oh yeah, the film is really bad. I almost forgot.
