The film is intended for children who will probably enjoy this. The script isn't strong enough to catch on with adults. Occasionally a joke, but unfortunately all rather bland I must say. There are definitely worse movies.

Then finally looked at what Turteltaub's blunder should represent. I can't really say that this is a good movie, quite the contrary.

The plot already sounds pretty ridiculous. Three little boys pretending to be ninjas. How realistic can you make a movie?
Ridiculous fights are there at will. And you can't really enjoy it.

The story is full of holes and illogical situations. Think of the way the boys go after the three dudes. Not just a direct rip-off of Home Alone, but also much worse executed. All the effort turned out to be for nothing, because the client decides to pick up the boys himself. Very strange this. Characters seem to show up out of nowhere when it suits the script best. The FBI in the end, the grandfather just after the kids have been taken and so that client. Call it cliché or absurd, but I don't like it at all.

There are also a few moments that turn out to be completely irrelevant. The basketball game and the whole thing about Emily, for example. The story isn't very well developed, so it's better to ignore these unimportant details, right?

The acting is average to bad. Especially the three 'kidnappers' better get back under their rock. I wasn't really annoyed by the children, but that doesn't mean they play their part brilliantly. The good Chinese doesn't seem too credible as a ninja expert either. He just doesn't care about his looks. Were there no Japanese in stock?

Also totally inadequate music. I have rarely heard such silly tunes during battle. Curse the man/woman who was responsible for this.

So little positive to report and in fact a real recommendation.

I never saw this one in my teens.

It is still doable as a family film, but you cannot compare it with Home Alone, Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, ET and 101 Dalmatians.

Especially this 1st part of 3 Ninjas sometimes shows some similarities with Home Alone.

Good old Professor Toru Tanaka can also be seen in this film.

He mainly starred in popular TV series such as The A-Team and Airwolf.

Not the best family movie, but not the worst either.

2.5 *
