"A love, a hope, a wall."
In the fall of 1961, the two lovers Konrad and Sophie decide to flee from East Berlin to the West through sewer tunnels. Sophia succeeds, Konrad stays behind. The two start completely different lives and have only a few encounters.

The film is from 1995, but looks very dated and old.
Everything seems a bit like the old Derricks from the 90s; everything is played very slowly and it hasn't really stood the test of time. The quality as the film appears on Netflix is poor, not full HD and with distracting black bars on the left and right.
I didn't connect with the main characters at all. They aren't introduced at the beginning either, just like the escape to West Germany.

I thought it was a beautiful film. About how life sometimes goes, and how it turns out differently than you wanted. About two people in love who cannot hold on to each other. Forced by circumstances to let go of each other, and then missing each other terribly. It left me speechless for a while. Meanwhile, Margarethe von Trotta balances thirty years of German history into two hours of film, based on what people experience. That is how it should be. I watched breathlessly and at one point no longer knew which images were original and which were staged. As the two main characters grew older, they were played by other actors almost unnoticed, without it being distracting. The final image is poignant. Bravo.
This film had been on my list for a long time, but I only just saw it for the first time, which surprised me. What also surprised me is that most of the comments here aren't about this film, but about another film someone may or may not have seen. But I saw that most people have unsubscribed.
