Social melodrama that at one point becomes quite depressing; the film is an autobiographical adaptation of a somewhat forgotten author, Fante, who described the hardships of Italian immigrants in the rural USA of the 1920s. The winter is harsh, the father is unemployed, the family is in debt. Feelings such as shame and wounded pride take the lead, but also the absence of the father figure and the tense relationship between Bandini and his wife are all consequences of this temporary poverty.
Certainly fun to see this somewhat forgotten production, with the beautiful Ornella Muti and the Italian-American accents. Still, the film fails to really strike a chord and it all doesn't seem as bad as it looks. If the intention was to make you feel the poverty and hardship, then this is not exactly successful, especially when Ornella Muti starts burning the money of that rich widow and Mantegna ultimately chooses to stay with the widow for a while with a fat cigar in his mouth. . Another film that flies by quickly and has little wrong with it, but which makes me wonder what point this whole story wanted to make. In the hands of an Italian director, this would have been much stronger.

Nice film about a poor immigrant family who have trouble making ends meet. The period is nicely portrayed (certainly also because of the dark use of color). The story is a bit thin, but the film is easy to watch. It also does not really want to become moving, despite the fact that quite a bit of suffering passes by.

In itself a commendable attempt by Deruddere to portray a poor Italian family in New York in the 1920s. Such families must have been legion. Setting and atmosphere were fine. Initially also a nice script. A world in which men ruled with their honor and responsibilities. Women endured the situation, unless you were filthy rich.
What bothered me most was the cheap, rushed ending. That was really easy and fast. Too bad, because the film deserved better. Nice to see some Flemish actors in smaller roles, such as Josse De Pauw (Mr. Voss) or François Beukelaers (Mr. Helmer), among those American actors.
Not the masterpiece that some, including Deruddere, had hoped for, but certainly not despite its shortcomings.
