Lucky Kunene is an uneducated gas station attendant from the slums of Soweto, South Africa. Apartheid has just been abolished and the boy sees a new world opening up. But Lucky doesn't want to pump gas for the rest of his life. A nice viewer, this Jerusalema, but apart from the South African setting, it offers very little new under the sun and also has a few serious downsides.
The beginning is still pretty fun I must say. Lucky is still young and especially the scene where he and his friend steal a car, where turns out they can't drive, is fun and also quite funny. The acting is clearly a lot less. Where a comparable film like Cidade de Deus excels because of the excellent acting, it is very weak here. Lucky is still doing reasonably well, but especially that friend of his is extremely weak. It also doesn't really help that the dialogues aren't always well written.
Furthermore, a striking direction, with matching hip-looking editing, which is not always beautiful. I also didn't like the accompanying soundtrack. The most unbelievable moment in the film is when hehas a love affair with the white woman he helped. I thought it was quite unbelievable and didn't really fit the bill. Still, it's all very entertaining and it doesn't bore for a second. I also liked it, that Lucky still escaped at the end. I actually didn't expect that, but thought it fit well as a conclusion.
Jerusalema is certainly not boring viewing food, is sometimes even quite enjoyable, but simply has too many weak elements to be really good.

Smooth gangster film with few innovative elements. The story looks good, but it doesn't really impress. Recommended, yes somewhat but the best in its genre, no certainly not.

The high average here (3.66) and IMDB (7.3) made me expect more than the film has to offer in the end.
Visually it is fine and the atmosphere that is created with this is also good, but the story has too little to do to be able to watch this for 2 hours.
