André Laurent is the captain of a salvage tugboat. He lives with his sick wife Yvonne in the Breton port city of Brest. Yvonne suffers from his absence and withholds from him the seriousness of her illness. She would love for him to give up his dangerous work and start a new life elsewhere. One evening, during the wedding party of one of his crew members, he is called upon to rush to the aid of a freighter in distress. He manages to get the ship to safety. However, the captain of the cargo ship refuses to pay him and flees. André falls in love with the wife of the escaped captain, who was traveling with her husband...

Jean Gabin, as usual, portrays an idealist, honest and just, and fighting against injustice and overwhelming odds, but then love enters, the film takes a turn and goes down a melodramatic path, pushing aside the realism he previously bore.
The images of the rough sea are naturally very dated, the dialogues are folksy and spontaneous (Gabin remains a mumbler, a shame), and nothing can be faulted regarding the acting.
This is the first time I've seen a film about the duties of tugboats, outside of traditional harbor work. In jargon, they are referred to as "stay-stayed boats," as I remember hearing in the past.

A rather bleak and literally dark film about two people stuck in their lives and/or relationship, set against the symbolic backdrop of tugboats with rescue workers. Fine, sensitive performances by Gabin and Morgan.
I don't like saying it, but visually the film is a bit too dated, which detracts from the experience.
