I cannot and will not argue that this film - like almost every (genre) film - uses clichés, but the platitudes are used here to mislead the more or less experienced horror viewer.

The gas station, run by inbred-smelling hillbillies, for example, complete with mentally retarded child on a swing seat, is an unmistakable reference to Deliverance , while the accompanying music refers to The Last House on the Left. The implication of this particular citation is that the young college students can look forward to sore buttocks, the anal treat with which, in good horror movie habit, rural dwellers indicate to urban vacationers that their metropolitan value system has no universal validity, or something like that But guess what? : the danger lurks, at least initially, in a completely different angle.

The clichés and the accompanying expectations are tilted, that is, Roth quotes deliberately, not out of laziness, but to throw the viewer off balance, and that is, at least I find, very amusing. In short, Roth treats us to a dashing mess, in which visible Schadenfreude displays the worst of people.

Eli Roth is no stranger to horror, although his films are not exactly strong right now. He mainly goes for blood and filth with titles such as Hostel and Gridnouse. Cabin Fever shows that he knows something about the genre, but at the same time that it is no guarantee for a good film. A rather disjointed film with no really standout scenes or characters. Too little atmospheric to be a thriller, too little spectacle to stand out as a gore film and too little fun to let the self-mockery excel.

The cast is unimpressive with most of the names here in their best movie roles. Which says a lot about the rest of the record. Cerina Vincent also starred in Not Another Teen Movie where she played the constantly naked 'foreign student'.

Cabin Fever isn't all bad, but it gets going rather late and doesn't manage to hold the viewer's attention.

Reading the title and the synopsis I had a very strong Evil Dead dejavu. It was not immediately clear to me whether this was a remake. But in spite of the not so great comments and figures, I still got a kick out of this holiday afternoon.

The beginning, however, parallels Evil Dead, a handful of youth who go into the woods for a week/weekend to a cabin and get into serious trouble there. The first half of the film develops around the superficial characters as average adolescent behavior with the shocking and retarded character Bert as the highlight. Although the blurry cop on the bike is not inferior to that. Stoking a fire, shooting stupid, puppy love, drinking and using drugs...it will. After the 'appearance' things don't get any better and the average level drops to panic, a lot of screaming and a lot of stupid choices and actions.

There is, however, some improvement in the film in the second half. The music was already good anyway and the Gore, kills and violence pulls the whole thing even further in the positive direction. In any case, the ladies in Cabin Fever are better than in Evil Dead, which I will keep comparing the film to for the sake of convenience. But it doesn't save the film, the most ridiculous thing is to have sex with someone who is most likely infected and then rinse your cock with mouthwash. Well... who would come up with something like that? Just downright stupid.

Despite the still nice denouement, relatively little remains of the film, whose title also raises question marks. Cabin Fever freely translated means cabin fever and means as much as being locked up and going crazy and is mainly psychologically charged. Something as far as I'm concerned is completely out of the question in this film where the danger clearly comes from outside. Then Evil Dead was more Cabin Fever. No, this is not my thing and not my genre.
