A decent murder mystery that stands out because the Wall Street Crash plays a significant (plot-driving) role. William Powell plays the gentleman detective Philo Vance, who's actually more interested in Japanese art, but who here has to dedicate himself to the mystery of a stockbroker who, during a pleasantly stormy night, is murdered in his own home by one of the guests, all of whom have a reason to shoot their host. The role is a kind of practice run for Powell's later films, such as The Thin Man, with, of course, another dimwitted inspector and a few cynical journalists, a good pace (especially considering this is a fairly early talkie), not too long, a nice punch line (the perpetrator's modus operandi), and a very long take during Vance's explanation, which today would have been divided into countless cuts and close-ups without much effect – the way Powell and the rest of the cast handle it here works just fine. Only Paul Lukas seems to think he's in a comedy or even a farce, and in a sense, he is, because no one has to take this whodunit seriously, but it's entertaining nonetheless. (Funny enough, five years later, Lukas himself played Philo Vance in The Casino Murder Case.)
