Cheh again.

I've been skipping Shaw Bros. martial arts from the 70s for a few years now. I did spend some time digging through the Shaw Bros. catalog, but after seeing a few films, it just seemed like a lot of the same old stuff.

But when they introduce these kinds of films on Netflix, I can hardly resist watching them. If only to show there's a genuine interest in films like this. And Cheh is a household name among Shaw Bros. directors, so it's an opportunity I'd rather not miss.

It feels a bit like coming home. Familiar territory, especially in terms of progression. Some initial problems, the good guys losing out to the inhumanly strong bad guys, the retreat to a training camp outside the city, and then the eventual, triumphant return. Only, it apparently went a bit too fast, and Cheh had to double-cut the entire final section to get to 100 minutes of film. Unnecessary, if you ask me.

It's also quite funny to see a Shaw Bros. film again. The martial arts are rather mediocre; for truly great choreography, you'd better watch Chia-Liang Liu, but there are some fun fights. The training is also funny, though nothing is truly original, and you've probably seen everything done better before.

So, for the Shaw Bros fans. But I don't think there are many of them on MM.

A village is being oppressed by the Manchus. They are assisted by three fighters, two of whom master the Steel Armor technique. This technique deflects opponents' blows and can even reflect them. Fu Sheng and Chi Kuan-chun are training to learn the Tiger & Crane fist, a technique they hope will penetrate the armor. A young Gordon Liu is also present. Unfortunately, the film is too long; it could easily have been told in 90 minutes.
