Clear rip-off of Star Wars, right down to the title. Nowadays it has fallen into obscurity and I must admit that as of this year I had never heard of this film before. Quite impressive for someone who grew up in the '80s and watched these kinds of cartoons a lot.

Starchaser was a huge flop in the cinemas. With a budget of 15 million dollars, it was definitely not a cheap production. It was one of the first animated films to be shot in 3D, mixing traditional animation with computer animation. However, the result is mediocre. The background animation is fine, but the animation of the characters is poor and lacks details. In this she hardly rises above the level of an average episode from well-known animated series of that time, such as He-Man.

The story is very messy and the ending is rushed. It must be frustrating for the supreme villain to have his entire fleet of spaceships destroyed at the touch of a button, while it took him 1,200 years to gather this army.

It is also not really clear which target group the makers had in mind when making this film. She is not really aimed at children, because she has a few too graphic scenes for that (for example, Orin's girlfriend is strangled to death in front of his eyes). And for adults the film is probably too simple. If I had seen it in the 80's I probably would have appreciated it more than I do now. I now found it quite long-winded and the action unspectacular.

Not a bad thing to see once, if only for the excellent music by Andrew Belling.

Quite a nice animation that is aimed more at an adult audience, the drawings are reasonable but unfortunately lack detail, the story is indeed a lot like Star Wars, but that doesn't matter.
