Wonderful refreshing comedy about a student named Howard Marks who comes into contact with marijuana and eventually becomes a worldwide drug dealer, and with his clever techniques that he has learned from his studies he always works cleverly. The entire film is also nicely cheerful and atmospheric, the humor is ample and the acting is fine. Howard Marks aka Mr. Nice is also very well placed here and the supporting roles of his wife and his various companions are also very special. Furthermore, there is little you can attach to it in terms of plot. We see Mr. Nice simply work skillfully to trade hash and weed worldwide and then often with clever disguises (for example as a kind of non-existent pop group to trade in America). But no matter how clever you try, it does not always go smoothly. That fraud he uses in court to get away with it was grand. Also beautiful locations and the fact that they have to speak secret language over the phone for Big Brother is also very cleverly done.

Just a very enjoyable film, that also works very well with a joint. The 60s-70s and 80s atmosphere is very nicely alternated with old fragments and home-made decoration and the film never bores. I say: Successful.

Nice but in my opinion too long a depiction of the life of a charming louse. On my television I could not see where the green screen work should be visible, but it did cost me more and more effort to muster any sympathy for our hero as the film progressed. Poor Chloë... David Thewlis is (as always) great again.

Howard Marks, the man who police say was the kingpin of the biggest cannabis deals of the 1970s and 80s, is a perfect match for Rhys Ifans, who plays his character with just the right mix of opportunism, charisma and irony. Marks made his name in his Welsh hometown of Kenfig Hill as the first resident to study at Oxford University, where he discovered the “holy herb” and established a reputation as a womanizer and the man who could get anyone a drug. After graduating, he throws himself into the cannabis trade using multiple identities and the help of a network of loyal friends. Among them is his future wife Judy [Chloë Sevigny] and James McCann [David Thewlis], a notorious drug and arms smuggler who worked for the terrorist Provisional IRA, among others. Like Howard’s life, a lot happens in a short space of time, making this an entertaining but not overly in-depth biopic.
