SM-rechter plot
When Koen's marriage to Magda threatens to fall apart, he decides to test his own decency limits to the limit. Together they discover her hidden desires. Koen never thought that SM could lead to a happy marriage. But when Magda gradually moves on, and seeks more extreme forms of pleasure, the couple becomes entangled in a web of pimps, clicking gendarmes and envious colleagues.

Pretty okay.
Nowhere high, but a decent drama about the true story about the so-called SM judge. The SM scenes are also quite tastefully portrayed.
However, the focus is on the human drama and the freedom that everyone should have to do what they want in their bedroom. Actually totally taken aback that that judge was convicted for such cases (however untasteful you find them otherwise). Even more striking is the fact that he apparently also failed at the Court of Human Rights. Shouldn't be allowed anymore in these times.

SM Judge is a more than decent film from Flanders. Based largely on a true story, it's hard to believe that this private affair caused such a stir in the 1990s. Well, it's not my thing either, but the archaic fallacies cited by the court are repulsive. It was more like a personal reckoning. Also, the fact that his pension rights were taken away is disproportionate to the allegations. I was therefore surprised that he was not even proved right at the Court of the ECHR.
Strong and engaging performance by Gene Bervoets and Veerle Dobbelaere. Beautifully filmed, breaking the taboo surrounding SM. Strong scenes without going over the line, yet hard enough to be seen as too soft or too good. Central is the unconditional love between man and woman throughout their marriage: before the SM, during the SM and also after.
The film is quite short and with these 90 minutes it sometimes goes too fast, so that the necessary depth or development is missing. For example, the court scene and the investigation were rather limited. Magda's metamorphosis was also quite abrupt after she suddenly trotted out that SM is the medicine for her. Otherwise a great movie and fun to watch again.
