A wonderful 1940s film, from the time when the world still radiated friendliness. Because the war was over and because people no longer had to worry about big things, they started worrying about small things again. Nowadays it may all seem rather old-fashioned, but it is above all atmospheric and heart-warming. The message of films like this is simple: Life Is Beautiful!

Fred MacMurray is perfect for the role as an enthusiastic city dweller who is completely absorbed in his new work as a farmer, where his boyhood dream comes true.

Claudette Colbert also does a very nice job, but I would rather see her play in a slightly sharper comedy, such as It Happened One Night.

The Egg and I can be seen as the first part of the Ma and Pa Kettle film series. While Ma and Pa Kettle play a supporting role in this film, they are from Ma and Pa Kettle (1949) (which is also (called The Further Adventures of Ma and Pa Kettle) the main characters. That formula turned out to be successful, because 8 more Ma and Pa Kettle's were subsequently made.

Good film in which a married couple buys a dilapidated farm to live and work there. Perhaps a bit fragmentary in design, but it is one entertaining scene after another. However, the ending takes a little too long. Nice characters filled in by an equally nice cast. As far as I'm concerned, it's still as fun after 70 years as it was back then.
