"face the beast"

Clive Barker rarely disappoints. he's a horror master. Which is sometimes not as good as but fits in the ranks of S King, and Wes craven .

This is one that sticks, it takes a while to get into it,

The pace is not high, and in the beginning not much happens (you think) and you find out that the emphasis is on psychology.

But "no worries" that is more than made up for in the intensely intense ending.

It's a very good build up to the climax, so the somewhat (what seems easy) slow start is worth it.

strong

This horror film, based on a short story by Clive Barker, just couldn't hold my attention. That's in large part due to Anthony DiBlasi giving the whole movie a saturated, sinister look and falling into scare tricks that really don't scare me, like jump cuts, sped up footage and extremely amplified sound effects. Furthermore, the relationship between the three main characters - who jointly investigate 'fear' - is not credible, certainly not when one of them starts to show fairly clear traits, so that every normal thinking person will immediately give up. Sure there's a lot of bloodshed and some CGI horror too, but there's too little build-up and the effects are pretty over-the-top so I couldn't really enjoy it.

Solid.

Dread was the entry point for DiBlasi who probably also immediately grabbed his biggest hit with this film, and possibly even his best. I have yet to see a number of his works, but the ones I still want to see have been largely negatively judged. I've probably seen his better work by now. Dread certainly is.

An advantage of this film is that it works nicely sinister and macabre. It is also clear that it is based on a work by Clive Barker, because the imaginative atmosphere combined with a mean undertone is indeed reminiscent of Barker's work. Yet fantasy is not a prominent part of the film, it is more about the fact and the thinking of the characters, but the atmosphere tastes supernatural.

Nice editing and effects, the film looks neat in terms of horror. Strong use of color with a nice accompanying mood setting. It's also nice that the film doesn't shy away from the dirty side of horror. It's not really disturbing, but Dread nevertheless dares to go a bit further than the average horror film. That makes DiBlasi's debut quite a work of its own.

The acting isn't brilliant, but it's nice. It's indeed a shame that the chemistry doesn't work as well as the characters aren't intriguing enough for that. The relationships are also very superficially worked out so you don't really feel anything for them. Nevertheless, DiBlasi keeps trying, but sometimes forgets to focus on the horror and that is exactly what the film needs.

It's not very scary, but it guarantees a good evening of entertainment that flies by quickly. There is a professional and skilled air about the film that gives it the right tone for some horror, horror and fear. Certainly not a disappointment, but perhaps this is not the film that the general public will love. Too bad DiBlasi couldn't touch level anymore with his later projects.
