The Messenger plot
"The Scars of War Will Last Forever."
Will Montgomery (Foster) has only three months left to complete his service as the American physician to the military hospitals in Iraq. The girl, Kelly (Malone), that Will left behind in America, has decided to move on with her life. This makes Will obsessed and wants to make a new start in his life as a soldier. He meets military man Anthony 'Tony' Stone (Harrelson). Tony teaches Will all about his profession and new job task at the Casualty Notification desk. Will, who narrowly escaped death, will now have to break the news of those who didn't make it. Between their assignments, these two soldiers form a unique bond that helps them in their struggle to return to their normal lives, knowing that not everything can go back to normal.

Good film, especially with the more observational images about the work of the two soldiers who visit relatives. Again and again a different reaction, often also slightly exaggerated for my feeling, which turned this into a very wry humour. But I do appreciate that. Also well played by both actors with good mutual chemistry . But Samantha Morton also has a nice and modest role. The end with that trip to that holiday home and past the wedding I found it a bit less interesting, and that Foster of course still has to tell his trauma (however well acted and convincingly ) didn't really need me. 3.5*.

Modest but good film about a heavy and dark event, the reporting about the fallen to the family, and the traumas that warfare entails. No bells or whistles, no spectacle, a modest drama about two soldiers who both struggle with their own demons and try to accomplish the task they have. At first the cooperation is difficult, but with the necessary bumps they grow towards each other. The release at the end in which they both tell their experiences Stone(Harelson) in this case nothing at all is in that sense the anticlimax, and the point where everything becomes understandable in my opinion.

Strong in this film are the correct but businesslike communications to the most concerned person of a war victim at the beginning and later in the film the strong account of the brutality of the war.
I don't like that quick romance between the sergeant and the widow and a few exaggerated scenes that shouldn't have been done so great.
A well-intentioned film, certainly, but certainly not a high-flyer. As said, it has ups and downs. Woody Harrelson is better at his role than Ben Foster.
