Remarkable debut by director M. Night Shyamalan in which he also plays the leading role and then wisely chose not to do that anymore in his subsequent projects. He is a particularly monotonous figure with little charisma and the same applies to the supporting roles. Furthermore, the technical aspect looks more than solid for a film financed by Shyamalan's parents. Beautiful framing and an eye for focused images, and in terms of scale the finale is strikingly grand. Having mentioned that, the positive points regarding Praying with Anger unfortunately run out, because the rest of the film is a tiring and boringly designed representation of culture shock. On a structural level, the film jumps from sentimental to serious in the blink of an eye and the dramatic scenes barely make sense, on top of that a hopeless soundtrack that easily takes away any atmosphere. Many of the criticisms within this film were neatly ironed out in Shyamalan's later work, but that does not alter the fact that this debut was mainly a tiring experience.
