The corpse of a man - who married a young countess for money - is found with his son with him, who still has a smoking revolver in his hand. The widow soon has a mental breakdown. With virtually no evidence, a neighbor in love tries to clarify the affair with the psychiatrist.

Within Sergio Sollima's oeuvre, it's considered his only giallo. But within the giallo world, I consider it an outlier. Unlike many contemporaries, this one has a very tight script as its main tool for captivating the viewer—in addition to the excellent performances. By that, I mean the focus isn't on visualizing a murderer with leather gloves and all that. On the contrary, it's a truly good whodunit that aims to challenge our minds. Although, on the other hand, it does contain the typical giallo element of childhood trauma, in this case with the suggestion of an Oedipus complex. The direction is excellent, and so is the score, provided by grandmaster Ennio Morricone.
