In terms of its premise, it is a decent crime mystery, starring the now-forgotten Edmund Lowe, who convincingly plays both a down-on-his-luck drunkard and a distinguished inspector in a tailcoat. Multiple plot lines intertwine, including that of Robert Newton as a jewel thief who has a fling with nightclub singer and dancer Tamara Desni, but the main plot revolves around Lowe having to curb his alcoholism to unmask the mysterious fence from the title. After a promising start, the film sags a bit because the plot doesn't really make progress, and the fact that Lowe at the end can suddenly reduce the hitherto so cool-headed villain to a nervous wreck purely through suggestion and intimidation doesn't come across as very believable, even in a film of this age. Bizarre cameo by a young Alastair Sim as a journalist who has almost nothing to do but dictate sensational news items to a typist, and a mini-role by Michael Rennie (the alien from the original The Day the Earth Stood Still from 1951) as the doctor in the morgue.
