Very nice, atmospheric film, originally made for TV.

They have cleverly combined a number of well-known storylines by Arthur Conan Doyle and fabricated a new, exciting Holmes adventure from them.

Moore is surprisingly good as Holmes and manages to temporarily shed his Saint and Bond image, and ex-Avenger Magnee is okay as his assistant and biographer Watson (although he puts on a somewhat weird, hoarse voice for the entire film), Charlotte Rampling is Irene Adler, Holmes's great love and the only woman he has ever loved, but it is director John Huston as arch-nemesis Moriarty who steals the show.

Beautiful vintage set design and art direction in this very polished, luxurious production.

The English Blu-ray is of very good quality, and you can watch the film in both the original 4:3 TV version and a special theater widescreen version.

A good, serious Holmes adventure without ironic humor (except perhaps when Holmes poses as a pedantic escape artist), with a fine cast, beautiful sets and costumes, a nice plot, and a fine explanation of the impossible gold heist. Roger Moore and Patrick Macnee deliver outstanding performances, but it is a shame that Charlotte Rampling and John Huston get so little to do (especially when I remember how effective the latter was in a truly good and well-written role in Chinatown). All in all, a fun way to pass the time, although the plot never really becomes exciting or compelling – ultimately, this is more of a loving tribute than a promising pilot. (Funny detail: the kidnapped son of Irene Adler and possibly Holmes is played by Geoffrey [Roger's son] Moore.)
