Another catchy film by Mike Leigh about the underprivileged bottom of society. Timothy Spall is of course cut out for the lead role and Lesley Manville also plays a very beautiful, sad role. As nightbreed and Leo1954 already write, the English are masters at making these kinds of dramas, which will not leave you indifferent. The more so because there will always be people who encounter little or no happiness in their lives.

I had that, and mash, and like... green cauliflower stuff.

Realistic portrait of three troubled working class families. They are not extremely poor, but work part-time or without a permanent contract in poorly paid jobs. Some of their problems are their own fault: unhealthy eating, alcoholism, laziness...

You get sympathy for the characters despite their stupidity. The only really unsympathetic character is Jason, who gets Donna pregnant but then refuses to take the responsibility. Rory's heart attack is a climax that brings his family together with some vague promises and good intentions. Rory even learns to eat broccoli - "green cauliflower".

One aspect is not really realistic: that there are so many serious conversations. In reality, people mostly talk about football, the weather and gossip, but hey, two hours of small talk would be annoying.
