"Everyone has a choice. Every choice has a consequence."

Paulie and Brian are two childhood friends. They grew up in an Irish Catholic environment, where minor robberies were seen as normal. As a child they decided to deliver something for a local mobster and soon they were addicted to that life. Fifteen years later, they are stuck in this life full of easy money, which they spend just as quickly. Brian's wife can't take it anymore, which causes problems in their relationship. At the same time, they have to watch out for the local gang wars and for Detective Morgan.

Goodman making a movie about himself and getting a decent cast for it. He is also not bad as an Irish kingpin. Hardened and tough guy, you can see it right away. It also shows in his movie. It wasn't all roses in the gray and wintry Boston South, where crime seems the most natural thing in the world.

It all feels a bit like a big slice of life, a bit off the cuff and without much frills. He doesn't do hyped drama, the music is fairly subtle and Ruffalo, Hawke and the rest play it quite naturally. Something about a petty criminal and father who even tries to hold his own, fails and tries to pick himself up again.

Goodman doesn't spare himself, although of course you don't know what else he has eaten. He switches quite quickly by making a lot of use of short scenes. That gives his film a nice rhythm and without it becoming a special life story, it has enough hooks to hold the attention, although the beginning or end is a bit bland.

Bit of a cliché of course. Staying a crook is easier than looking for a job... until other interests come into play, such as having a family. Ruffalo is an actor who can handle the ups and downs of making choices. Nowhere are script and direction close to the characters. As a result, involvement remains limited.
