"NEW MEXICO'S NOTORIOUS UNDERGROUND DESERT PRISON!"

During the American Civil War, the gullible Gil Hanley attracts the attention of a mysterious stranger. When it turns out that this stranger was part of an infamous gang of mercenaries, Gil is convicted for being considered a sympathizer. Innocent Gil is taken to Hellgate Prison in New Mexico, where he cannot count on the sympathy of Lieutenant Tod Vorhees, a Confederate officer.
