Nice if you have a truck fetish.

The first half hour of the film is still good and gross eg a child who is crushed by a steamroller but after that the film gets bogged down in a very badly acted and lame affair.
Still I was able to watch it because of the 80's atmosphere and the AC/DC soundtrack also made up for a lot.

Reasonable film in which electrical appliances and trucks run wild when a comet passes the earth. A nice fact that on the one hand is entertaining and deliciously ridiculous. On the other hand, the storytelling and characters are rather lousy. Quite a bit of spectacle and action. It is understandable why Stephen King as director has remained with this one film.

Mind at 0, maybe even -1, and enjoy watching without taking it seriously. It's been at least 15 years, maybe longer, since I've seen this one and then I noticed the movie as entertaining too. Now it finally came through the cycle again.

Prima the film starts with the random coming to life of vehicles or tools that taste blood. Exaggerated and least scary in the initial phase is the bridge, but oh well. The steamroller is cool and together with the death of Duncan these are some fine semi-horror moments. The focus quickly shifts to the roadside restaurant where a number of people are sheltering/locked up. Beautiful is the leader of the trucks, the truck with the goblin face, and together with the hunted couple on the highway and the moment where one is forced to refuel, these are fine and fun moments.

The book could be better, unfortunately I can't remember it enough. You can be critical of things like how scary it gets now. The trucks do nothing but drive in circles, where are they supposed to be? Driving down the people and the roadhouse? That would be stupid because they are smart enough to force them out to refuel. There is no super acting and everyone present is also quite cliché with the spring chicken woman who has just got married, an extremely mean boss and an anti-hero as leader. Well, it's not all great.

But you shouldn't look at that too much. It is not an Oscar winner, and it is simply a King film adaptation, by King himself, you can also see it in the beginning, and especially the time frame from 1986 plays a role. It's amazing how much of that stuff drives without a driver. Harrington also suffice as spicy eye candy, not to mention the fine music of ACDC. Esteves is also in reasonable doing. It makes Maximum Overdrive an extremely entertaining film for me and maybe even a guilty pleasure.
