Extraordinarily atmospheric images go hand in hand with ear-paining organ noise. My eardrums were put to the test. Although it's not just the music itself, but also the continuous presence of it that made me a little crazy. A few more silences would have benefited this film.
A special, but for me personally rather sterile film. Hermetically does indeed cover the load. Visually it is at times graceful enough to create a penetrating atmosphere, although the rather futile attempt at story that the film does several times gets in the way. In combination with the increasingly repetitive visual language, and the, as mentioned, terrible music, it ensures that the film starts to stagnate halfway through.
Peculiar and at times atmospheric, but not enough to really stir something in me. 2.5*.

A film that had been on my to-see list for about 15 years. Every time I read the mixed reviews here I put it off again.
It hasn't turned out to be my movie either. I'm not averse to an experimental film from time to time, but Last Year at Marienbad is so cold and distant that I can't do anything with it. Every scene and every dialogue is stretched long and I had enough of the pretentious staring into the distance. And then there's also that heavenly organ constantly coming over it...
The film made it clear to me that I look for emotions in a film and characters that I can identify with (even if only slightly). I am grateful to Mr Resnais for that.
