Surreal 1984-esque sci-fi dystopia, undoubtedly a commentary on the situation in Poland at the time—in any case, the film was banned domestically for that reason. The independent trade union Solidarność had emerged shortly before, and at the end of '81, the government would declare 'martial law'.

Despite the thin plot—a steady succession of events with reflective dialogue—the film still makes an impression through its somber, dreamy tone and cold settings. And fortunately, there is also a wry sense of dark humor.

The film effectively demonstrates how a dictatorship exploits suspicion, paranoia, and mutual distrust, and the role the media plays in the top-down presentation of a specific 'manufactured' truth.

Although the film was perhaps intended more for the communist dictatorships of that era, the commentary on mass media proves to remain relevant and transcendent regardless of the sender: "You feel smarter and smarter, as what you watch gets dumber and dumber." Indeed.
