Well. I don't really like costume dramas, or movies from that era. I often find it a bit too sweet, because of all the poetry. Why did I watch this movie anyway? Because I hoped to be surprised. And that worked out nicely. Beautiful understated acting, certainly believable and a lot less sweet than I expected. It's cute, but not in a slimy way, which is how I like it.

The film touched me, it is quite realistic. Love is beautiful, but it can also be very painful. The passionate passion bursts from the screen and there is clear chemistry. The music is beautiful, the images beautiful and the acting is also more than okay, so I can say that I am positively surprised.

Let me state that this isn't a film I would watch again in a hurry, after seeing it once it is sufficient and although I didn't think it was bad, a review probably won't be in it.

I'll just stick with this memory and the positive feeling I kept about him, then at least it can't disappoint after all.

Bright Star is a valiant attempt to turn a film about Romantic poetry into an equally Romantic film (and no, I don't mean so much about love, but with the feel of the Romantic period). I don't think that's done too often. I think Bright Star has just as many big fans as people who don't know much about it. Romance has never quite become my thing and I'm afraid Bright Star isn't changing it much.

At first I found it interesting to follow the characters. The acting by Wishaw, Cornish and Schneider is in any case very strong, which made me interested in the characters. In the end, however, it quickly became a succession of talking about love, about feelings and about the pain of being apart. That means a lot of shots of people suffering and showing longing looks. It's just not my taste, I'm afraid.

Campion tries to spice it up by creating poetic images and situations, even resulting in a room full of butterflies. Perhaps if this line was continued a bit more strongly and Campion had made a more fully lyrical film a la Malick, it might have been a lot better. Now the greater appetite for realism makes the more enchanting elements somewhat ridiculous. It looks nice, but it doesn't blend together as nicely as you'd like. The very thing Keats is praised for early on in the film, his rhythmicity and the ability to make people fly with his words, should have been here, but I missed. Not an easy task and I must add that despite the formal beauty of his work, Keats's poems do not really grab me either.

So probably this just isn't a movie for me. I can't deny that it looks beautiful, that the acting is top notch and that the characters have the depth they deserve. It just doesn't make a deep impression on me.
2.5*

Despite the poems by John Keats, a disappointing film about the last years of the famous poet's life. Besides those lyrics, the film has little to offer, although the charming Abbie Cornish does her best to make the most of it. It's romance from the cold ground, because the chemistry between her and Ben Whishaw is lacking. I expected much more from this.
