Les Lèvres Rouges plot

"These are the Daughters of Darkness… They are waiting for you – They thrive on blood!"

A newlywed couple arrives in Ostend to spend their honeymoon. They stay in an extravagant, almost deserted coastal hotel. Stefan is a wealthy Englishman, with hidden cynical streaks, while Valerie is a pretty Swedish blonde, of lower birth. However, Stefan doesn't want Valerie to meet his parents and tries to invent all kinds of excuses not to have to leave for England with her. Two new guests arrive: a Hungarian Countess, Elisabeth Bathory, accompanied by a mysterious young woman. They turn out to be a lesbian couple.

The great setting and the almost Argentoesque cinematic style do it for him in this film. Unique in the genre, since it was almost exclusively recorded in Ostend. Add to that the atmospheric soundtrack that almost reminds of Goblin material and that the modern version of "Countess Bathory" still comes across as quite scary.

Furthermore, this is one of the few films from this period that I know that so subtly mixes eroticism with horror. The work of Jean Rollin and Jesus Franco, among others, is far too much on top, as this film lets it slumber in the background. Strong cinematography by Harry Kümel that his aforementioned genre companions can learn from.

Original in terms of setting and the other storylines are well developed. A beautiful and atmospheric work for those who appreciate classic (European) horror.

Nice film in which a newly married couple is on their way to the mother of the man. This slow horror film certainly does not rely on gore and also not really on tension. The sexuality and sensuality of the female vampires is central here. Stylishly portrayed and the actors also fit nicely within this framework.

Stylishly designed at times, but this film by director Harry Kümel is rather difficult to put in a corner. On the one hand, that is also the strength of Daughters of Darkness, on the other hand, there is not much going on. From a cinematic perspective, you also have a disadvantage if you bring together cast members who all cannot act, especially Delphine Seyrig delivers a particularly uncharismatic figure. The content is otherwise neither here nor there and the tension is hard to find, so that only the neat cinematography leaves a certain impression. It all forms a film that is really not to be walked through.
