Juha plot
Juha is a Finnish farmer who lives a happy life with his young wife Marja. One summer day, Shemeikka is stranded on their land with car trouble. While Juha tries to fix the car, Shemeikka flirts with Marja. He tells her that she is far too good and too beautiful for such a poor life on the land. The meeting with this charming urban man means a turning point in Marja's life. She sees herself and Juha with different eyes and becomes dissatisfied with her life.

I always wonder what that peasant woman sees in this failed Don Juan, because he is not really mother's prettiest either. Ha, he accuses the farmer of being an old man, while I estimate his age to be at least fifteen years older.
But yes, the lure of the greener grass on the other side. Away from the drudgery of the boring and hard peasant life. The excitement of the city with its adventure, modernity and fun. Many have already left.
Kaurismaki's approach is different here. Actually a silent film with pan pancartes to explain the dialogues. A bit stiff at times, but apart from that it's fun to watch. I missed those dry dialogues that characterize Kaurismaki, but was instead impressed by the beautiful cinematography and images. Atmospheric and effective, as always.
