Original and entertaining story in which one can easily empathize.
Exciting all along the line and with solid acting where, as an aside, when I saw a young Rex Harrison I had to banish Professor Higgins from my thoughts.
The better work from the early 1940s about WWII, without battle scenes, but still referring to historical events.

Espionage and counterintelligence situations in this masterful British thriller. The first quarter of an hour takes you into it, with a short overview of Hitler's conquests at the start of the war, which also uses real footage. But afterwards the game is over and you get loads of suspense and British humor to deal with for five minutes. What I like about the film is the fact that the humor is slowly integrated and at no point does it get in the way of the suspense, but on the contrary helps to shape it.
Good marks to the entire cast, with a special mention to the ravishing Margaret Lockwood (yes, can I let myself go), Rex Harrison and especially the duo Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne.
The screenplay is exactly what I expect from a quality British production that wants to give the nation a boost. The final scene is a gem: if this had been the end of a Hitchcock, it would now undoubtedly be regarded as a classic.
I only knew of Carol Reed The Third Man - a film that suits me completely - and I'm glad to hear that he has made other top films such as this Night Train. Fine direction, although not as overwhelming as in the later The Third Man - which we can hardly blame him - but still using low angles and the better shadow work here and there. Cinematographer/cameraman on duty was Otto Kanturek, an Austrian who learned the trade in Berlin under Fritz Lang.

What a wonderful thriller with some espionage elements incorporated in it, the tension is expertly increased, the pace is good after a quiet but good intro and the end is very exciting with good suspense scenes in the train and a beautiful setting at the end.
What got me thinking though were the concentration camp scenes in which it actually just becomes clear
that the Allied Forces were much more aware of the horrors in those camps than was later admitted after the war .
