Seventeen-year-old Novalee Nation has already had a miserable life. She never knew her father and her mother abandoned her for the first macho. Novalee moved from one host family to another and she has never known a warm nesting feeling. But then she meets Willy Jack. Initially, Novalee finds love with him, until his alcohol addiction turns him into a bully. When Novalee becomes pregnant, Willy Jack refuses to take responsibility and dumps her in a roadhouse. There she is: no diploma, no money, no work and no place to stay.
