What a wonderful vibe this movie has. Loved every minute of it.

Ti West knows how to imitate that typical eighties atmosphere incredibly well. The set dressing, the costumes, hair and make-up to the way the film was shot. Everything is just right! The film is a wonderful slow burner. Not much happens. But West knows very well how to build up the tension, to close with a bang at the end.

So technically in order. The acting is also good and the music is very nice.

Very nice movie.

Typical - you gotta love it - movie. I love it. Well acted slowly built up atmospheric retro 80s horror. As if you have just rented a VHS with your Walkman on at the video store and can keep it for a week for 5 guilders.

The horror is actually in the lack of it. You know something is going to happen, but what and when? That works well. The lack of action in the first 80 minutes is more than made up for in the last fifteen minutes. Although this is accompanied by some improbabilities, but hey, wasn't this also the case in the films that served as inspiration for this House of the devil? The title actually says enough ........ no pomp and circumstance, but just watch the lights from this film at night with the sound on max.

The tour we get of the house by a solo dancing Walkman listening to Jocelin Donahue in her gender neutral eighties clothing is one of the highlights. Just like the role of Tom Noonan. His voice alone is creepy, not to mention his appearance. In short, want to get lost in a creaky house while you imagine yourself back in time? Then visit The house of the Devil .......... a house with 3.5 stars ........

Well say.

Lots of positive comments here. Apparently enough fans of the early 80s who are happy to see a blueprint of their favorite decade on celluloid, because besides the skillful way in which West is reviving the era, there is little to do here.

Stylish location, primo atmosphere, decent acting and a haunting soundtrack throughout the film. All very solid in 16mm, with even shots and close-ups that are directly indebted to the 80s. But shouldn't something also be done?

The whole first half is completely irrelevant, the second half - admittedly - does have some eerie moments, but from the shot with the occult-bloodbath-behind-the-door (what a weakness that was) actually more and more wrong. And that ending, what a sofa.

It looks nice, it really does. Convincing image of the time with an equally convincing atmosphere. But in the end it doesn't matter much. 2*
