I am very impressed with the acting. I am particularly pleased with the role of Jason Patric. His entire posture, facial expressions and intonation came across very realistically, like a battered boxer who has suffered a few too many blows.

The film also had a dark atmosphere that really put you in the mood of the story. However, I am less pleased with the story itself. There were a few things in it that I found a bit unbelievable. Examples: when Patric kidnapped the boy and drove him straight home, it was also on the radio news that the actual driver was already in intensive care. That goes a bit too quickly. The boy didn't seem very believable either. The child did not resist, did not speak and simply accepted everything. Furthermore, I found the role of the doctor very dubious. I couldn't quite place what he wanted from Patric and what his motives were.

I started with a 2.5, but now that I write this story I think he deserved a passing grade.

Film that muddles along for a long time and when it does pick up speed, logic is hard to find and the story is also filled with silly and useless scenes and pointless dialogue.

Actors are simply bad and there is also a narrator who is just boring.

Film based on the work of hard-boiled author Jim Thompson, set in the book in the 1950s. Great story in a typical noir atmosphere. Jason Patric stars as an ex-boxer on the edge or over the edge. In a love triangle with the equally great Bruce Dern as the shadowy figure Uncle Bud and a sharp Rachel Ward as the femme fatale on duty. Several times during the film I raised my eyebrows at the choices the characters make. For example, the choice to shelter the kidnapped child openly in Rachel Ward's house and the choice not to disguise themselves as kidnappers from the child. Does that mean Bruce Dern actually planned to make it disappear anyway? Otherwise the plan will never work because the child will be able to identify him and the house afterwards. The way out for Rachel Ward is clearer - woman who was pressured - even then. Because the child has diabetes, I assume that Bruce was aware of this and expected death the easy way.

I had a great time with this movie.
