A musical biography of singer Ruth Etting (Doris Day). Martin Snyder, a Chicago mobster, wants to take her to Florida to make her a star. Ruth Etting doesn't want that, but later she accepts. She becomes famous and under the direction of Martin Snyder she goes to Broadway to perform there. They marry each other, but they cannot find the happiness they seek.
