Snow Falling on Cedars plot

"First loves last forever."

Carl, a fisherman is found dead, entangled in his own nets. He has a serious head injury. Was he murdered? Kazuo, another fisherman, is suspected of the crime. During the investigation and trial, post-war anti-Japanese feelings flare. Ishmael, a local journalist, has a hard time finding out that his ex-girlfriend, Hatsue, is involved in the murder.
