Shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor, American opportunist Jones and his partner Johnny find themselves in China to sell oil to the Japanese invading army. There Johnny meets the strongly sympathetic Chinese teacher Carolyn Grant while they are on a trip to Shanghai. Sparks fly back and forth between these two strong characters, and neither of them wants to give in even an inch to the other. But when Jones witnesses Japanese brutality, his devotion to his Japanese clients begins to melt like snow in the sun.
