Les Roseaux Sauvages plot
Three boarding school students spend the summer before their final exams in a southern French provincial town with the daughter of a socialist teacher. The differences in sexual and political preferences lead to painful confrontations between the four.

Emotional talk film. Beautiful prose passes. It's strange that young people around the age of 17-18 (I estimate) talk so incredibly flamboyantly, deeply and thoughtfully. I've never experienced that myself. As beautiful as it is, it seemed very contrived to me.
The film tackles serious themes. Nothing optional is discussed. Very heavy handed. Topics such as homosexuality, literature, Algerian politics, emerging sexual feelings and personal fears and emotions are discussed in a melancholy tone. Almost always deadly serious. Almost always remarkably honest and remarkably philosophical. And of course with a staggeringly strong vocabulary.
Beautiful movie. That's for sure. The acting talent that visually accompanies all emotions and major events, in addition to using elevated language, is of a high level. The acting reflects the vulnerability and uncertainty that is masked by the wise-cracking dialogues. Fortunately, there is a perspective there that is largely missing from the text. Strong.
The French hilly landscape forms a beautiful summer background and provides some counterbalance to the melancholy atmosphere in the film and the seriousness of the characters.
Nice movie.

Don't follow the enthusiastic comments. I just thought it was an impersonal and uninteresting film. I don't actually know why I still checked 2.5, but come on. Also never seen such an impactless 360-degree shot as the ending here, the only thought you have while spinning is: why? And why now? Okay, so two thoughts.

The Wild Reeds was originally planned as part of a television series, so the original running time of this film was only 55 minutes. Later it was decided to make a feature film out of it and that is a very wise choice if you deal with the themes mentioned here. Homosexuality, coming-of-age and a bit of war drama are all parts that you will encounter here, but it is only that first theme that is somewhat fully developed. The other topics, even though they are so relevant to the progress of the story, are ultimately pushed to the background. Sidetracks such as discriminating against Algerian-French people are therefore very half-baked and make the overall experience feel like an unfinished story. Fortunately, the youth perform very well, with Élodie Bouchez in particular standing out. The summer atmosphere and the budding love relationships are fascinating enough, but director André Téchiné would have done better to stretch the film or make it less ambitious.
