Hank Smith is a brash but sensitive firefighter on a ship who is convinced that he draws his strength from the many hairs that cover his body. When his ship calls at the port of Lisbon, he is visited in the engine room by the rich but annoying Mildred Douglas, the girlfriend of the second engineer Tony Lazar. Disgusted at his profuse hair growth, Mildred calls Hank "hairy monkey." Angry at her reaction at first, Hank is still impressed by the attractive Mildred and it doesn't take long before he lets Mildred know too. Mildred exploits Hank's interest in her out of sheer selfishness, as she envies Helen Parker (whom Tony also has a soft spot for) and which eventually becomes the basis for the catastrophic events that follow.
