A young priest is the first parish assigned to Ambricourt in northern France. However, the inhabitants of the city are not interested, and therefore do not talk much with him. In his diary he describes the struggle with his environment and faith, which drives him further away from the village and God.

What a gritty and dry director Bresson is .. pffff. It's as if he resolves with every film that the corners of the viewer's mouth should not curl up in any scene.
Compared to Bresson, our cheerful friend Bergman is almost like a commercial R&B music video director. (Blingmar Bergman or something.

On Boekmeter we have a topic titled Tweelingboeken, in other words the phenomenon that two unrelated books can be very similar. There is, of course, a relationship with Journal d'un curé campagne for Journal d'un curé campagne. Ingmar Bergman made, you could say, the Protestant counterpart of this Catholic film.
I found this movie diary remarkably easy to watch and not as heavy as suggested here. The film's strength lies in its focus on the priest, his loneliness and doubts. It is much more about him as a person than about what exactly he says or believes. The camera work is also very much focused on him, with quite often filming from a low angle. Furthermore, the dissolves and fade-outs and the fairly fast scene transitions stand out. On a superficial look I can imagine that it can look a bit formal, but Journal d'un curé de campagne has a nice flow, which draws you into the film, without Bresson emphatically drawing attention to the style. Worked very well for me. The diary structure is also nicely preserved (from the book adaptation) and the musical support is excellent.
Towards the end it might take a little too long and I haven't seen a scene that really lifts it all up, but a great film. Currently on display on Netflix, a great opportunity.

Very minimalistic film about a young priest who has to lead his new parish, but is riddled with doubts. Doubts about his approach and rigid relationship with the villagers, but also doubts about himself and his health. His faith also wavers more and more and he seeks support from an elderly priest.
The diary, which is narrated through a voice-over, shows how he feels and how he copes with the difficult situation. The priest is central to the film and Bresson manages to approach this character strongly technically and substantively.
Excellent role by Laydou, who gave great shape to the hesitant young priest. A film that didn't touch me 100%, but was still worth seeing.
