Very strong film by Roberto Rossellini.

The film-maker takes a neutral position with regard to WWII itself, but inevitably leaves an impression of pity on the viewer when he sees the shot of Berlin and its population, living in poverty, with a youth that has no real youth, situations experiences rationing and the black market, is forced to resort to deceit and theft and possibly, even unconsciously, is weighed down by the regret that he has placed his trust in Nazism.

Shocking images, especially the closing scenes, with the young Edmund.

A film with strong opening and ending scenes, in which you become silent for a moment from the images of a completely destroyed Berlin. After those images and the intro I was immediately set on a strong film. However, that expectation was not met, especially since it starts a bit rudderless. Only after half an hour is it clear which way the film is going. The story is very depressing, which is at the expense of the realism that the film tries to radiate.

I have no complaints about the acting, I've seen the Italian dub and to be honest I didn't notice any bad acting, although the strength of the film is mainly to be found in the images of a devastated Berlin. Furthermore, it is a relatively short film that tries to get the most out of every minute, making it seem longer, although the story at the beginning could have been better in my opinion. More than 3*, towards 3.5*

In terms of style and message it reminded me a bit of Los Olvidados | The Young and the Damned (1950) by Buñuel.

I haven't seen too much of Rossellini yet, not to say nothing, so it's hard to judge where to place this film within his oeuvre. A fine film that, as the film title suggests, takes place just after the end of the Second World War in Berlin.

The city is still half in ruins and the reconstruction is far from finished. Be Allied or Russian soldiers. Something to detect that allows the full emphasis to be on the poor and miserable situation of many inhabitants. Many minors are orphans, others are condemned to poverty and have to queue daily for rations.

The film gives a very depressing and desperate picture of Germany after two lost (world) wars. Survival of the fittest, illegal creativity and exploitation of the weak flourish. Visually and mentally a strong film. Excellent work by Rossellini. The ending only adds to it, as if it couldn't be more black. Only the acting was not so great, not so much from little Edmund, but also not from his father, for example.
