Paisà plot
"There are always opportunities for redemption."
In six parts, the Allied invasion is followed from July 1943 to the winter of 1944, from Sicily to Venice. Communication is very very difficult. 1) A woman leads an Allied patrol through a minefield. She dies to protect an American soldier. 2) A crook steals a soldier's shoes, The American tracks him down in a slum. 3) A GI meets a woman on the day Rome is liberated. In six months they will meet again; He's cynical and she's a whore. 4) An American sister braves the journey across the Arno despite the German barrage to search for a partisan she is in love with.5) Three priests, one of them Jewish, appeal to the abbey in the north of the Apennines. 6) Allied soldiers and partisans try to escape captivity on the Po Valley.
