Ariel plot
This film is about Taisto Kasurinen, a Finnish coal miner whose father has just committed suicide, and who is arrested by the police for a crime he did not commit. During his detention, he dreams of fleeing from prison and leaving the country. He manages to escape, but things don't go quite as planned...

I can pretty much write the same thing here as with the other 8 Kaurism Lemurs I saw. All the ingredients are present again, it is one of his better ones, although there is not much difference between them. I had a great time again, at number 3 in my Kaurismaki top 9. In one sentence; a suit of the same cloth, which is both a plus and a minus.

Small but wonderful video by Aki Kaurismäki. A dramatic story of an unlucky man who ends up in prison, peppered with a number of dryly comic moments (I think the sliding roof of the car is one of the best, especially the way in which friend Mikkonen discovers how to do it).
Phlegmatic performances in the atmosphere of the film.

On the advice of his father and just before he commits suicide, Taisto goes out into the world, away from the place of gloom and stagnation. Only the grass is not always greener on the other side. Matti Pellonpää is not in the leading role, but Turo Pajala does a very good job. You would expect that with his broad chest he could take a beating, but that is also disappointing. Fortunately, he becomes a bit more assertive as the film progresses.
A very nice interaction with his partner Mikkonen (Matti Pellonpää) and the scenes with the convertible are great. In that respect it is a bit of a road movie, but there is more going on. It goes somewhat towards the criminal environment and prison is also involved.
And something we are less used to from Karismäki is the clear happy ending, or at least that is what we assume as we sail towards the Ariel. Mikkonen on the other hand, is no longer alive, wonderful actor, that man too!
