strong.

In addition to being a pure atmospheric film, Two Lovers is also a well-written love drama. The characters are real people and that results in realistic scenes. Leonard's choices aren't always well thought out, but falling in love with a bitch is something that can happen.
The cynical thing is of course that Leonard shows a lot of resemblance to her, but I still think it's good that the film doesn't end with suicide, but with the 'happy ending'.

Joaquin Phoenix is once again phenomenal. He portrays any emotion fantastically, but I especially like that glassy look of his. Top actors don't need dialogue, he shows that again here.
But the supporting characters offer enough resistance. Gwyneth Paltrow is quite strong (although she doesn't have the most rewarding part) and Vinessa Shaw can also charm.

James Gray once again creates a bomb atmosphere here. The first hour in particular is very strong, perhaps because the tone there is even more mysterious but also more playful. Even afterwards, the atmosphere remains trump, albeit in a different way. Gray makes grateful use of the nice location.
After We Own The Night, this is the second film I've seen by him, but I just had to go after his other work.

The title already says it all. During Two Lovers, Joaquin Phoenix swings between two women, for whom she feels something. It is nicely developed and acted, but it was not really startling. The last scenes were especially predictable.

Two lovers, a film with another strong Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role, in which he plays a complex character full of melancholy. Always balancing on the verge of suicide and I also had a pretty uneasy feeling with the character. As if at any moment the fuses could blow. Not like The Joker, although I can compare him to this before he turns into a psychopath there.

Furthermore, the two ladies in his life are central, who must give him a new future. Doubts everywhere, doubt and fear in himself about how he should behave, but also the stress of choice plays tricks on him. Certainty and safety versus the choice of heart and adventure. It seems boring versus fickleness, far away from the patronizing structure where he now finds himself at the Hotel Mama home.

A film that can be interpreted as a romantic film, but one that leans towards drama with a gloomy tinge. Nice! Thick 3.5*!

A warm and thoughtful film with a great and very cinematic atmosphere that makes the film believable in today's modern environment. The actors generally give good performances, but "Joaquin Phoenix" is outstanding who in the role of "Leonard", a character who struggles with his inner demons, achieves inner transformation and finds life. Although the film "Two Lovers" is an American product, it is exactly a film with the characteristics of a "French film". This film was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008 and was chosen by the critics.
