Tunnel Rats plot

"Hell is for Heroes"

1968, Vietnam. An American platoon makes its way through the jungle in the Cu Chi district. It's a dangerous mission: enemy troops have the uncanny ability to appear out of nowhere and then disappear again. The Americans soon discover the secret weapon of the Viet Cong: an underground tunnel system, through which the Vietnamese can move through the jungle undetected. The Americans decide to attack the enemy on their own property and dive into the tunnels. This turns out to be a colossal mistake: the corridors are full of booby traps and are so long and expansive that the Americans soon get lost in a cramped labyrinth, in which the battle continues openly in a gruesome way...

First of all, let me say that I have a lot of sympathy for Uwe Boll, I have now seen about five of his films, with Assault on Wall Street as the highlight for the time being. The other works I have seen by the man I found mainly underhounded pulp and in my opinion there is nothing wrong with that.

At Tunnel Rats, the tone is a lot more serious. The first half hour of the film convinced. The dejected atmosphere and the critical tone that Boll has are good. Then in the second part of the film comes the above and underground battles. It has to be said that underground moments are quite nasty. Boll conveys that well in itself, but the last 45 minutes are in my opinion rather monotonous and especially long-winded. The critical message is so thick that the good ending is no longer surprising.

What I really want to say is that Uwe Boll probably had the best intentions, but it just doesn't work. Whether this is due to the flat development of the character or the messy scenario? I don't know. However, I do think there could have been a lot more to it. The premise was good, but the execution a lot less.

Mediocre

Fine.

Boll is now venturing into a war film. As soon as there is some action in it, there are few genres that the man has not yet explored. So this time it was a war setting. I think the result is fine, but Boll is a victim of merciless reviewers.

For 1968 Tunnel Rats he was allowed to bring along some budget, but preferably 8 million, which can be quite enough for a good war film. Still, Boll wanted something more, and it shows. The film is sometimes too epic and too grandiose, which becomes clear to the viewer especially in the finale.

Acting is still to be done. There won't be anyone I'm going to remember and I certainly don't get that interest from this film. I think there's just been some savings in terms of actors because they seem a bit mixed up. The budget clearly had to go more towards the setting and action.

That's pretty neat. The setting looks pretty raw with good fitting cinematography. The forest is well portrayed. The wild camera work also contributes well, but this will not suit everyone. The editing could have been a bit faster because then Boll can still disguise the B-level a bit, which was unfortunately just a bit too clearly visible.

Tunnels are also a nice location, although I felt little tension or claustrophobia. It goes a bit too fast, because where the turbo above ground could have been a bit more, it could have been a bit more subtle underground. Furthermore, it is indeed a bit dark and not too interesting, and there are some historical inaccurate parts too clearly visible such as the new weapons for example.

It is gloomy and gray, but it could have been a little tighter and more interesting. Now it all looks nice and it sure is hard, but it still lacks something to be really good. Boll is not a bad director, but he often seems to jump to the next project too quickly and to rush his films.
