Seen a while back. I bought it at the thrift store and I scored because I think it's very good. The acting, image, story. All very strong. I had no trouble getting into it and I was captivated until the very end. A 10.5*

Penetrating and gripping drama, based on true events. The plot is told calmly and subtly built up, but emotionally it eventually comes as a sledgehammer. Andrew Garfield and Peter Mullan are excellent in the lead roles and the cast around them is also top notch. The sober design contributes to the slowly escalating suffocating atmosphere. Not an easy task, but the difficult subject is tackled and worked out very well, without easy solutions and excuses.

The film also reminded me of the Bulger case and is apparently partly inspired by that. Sober and gloomy setting in an underprivileged neighborhood somewhere in Great Britain where two boys grow up. How event is told through flashbacks. The installation was quite fine.

The acting was also fine with Mullen and Garfield. Hard to find sympathy for Garfield's character as a murderer. But that's what makes it all the more interesting. It was also clever how his character struggled with his new opportunities and eye for a new future.

That everything eventually collapses like a house of cards is a fascinating development in the film. Great subplot with that romance. A film that makes you think no matter how you feel about such projects where criminals with a new identity are given a new future. Thick 4.0*!
