Not a bad movie, but not as great as I thought it would be. Mainly a story about an all-consuming love between Bibi and Gigi, who really can't live without each other. What starts as a rose scent and moonshine, however, ends in a true hell . Schoenaerts and Exarchopoulos are truly magnificent and attention-grabbing in their roles. The film flies in, and after five minutes the couple is already having sex. How the relationship came about is of secondary importance. The symbiosis between the two is important. In the second half I was quite overwhelmed by melodramatic and gangster film clichés and I also found a lot less than the first hour... I completely agree with the last sentence of Quentin in his review .

Without incurable disease... (sigh) you don't have a good Belgian film as it turns out. Came across as forced. The robbery on the money transport was also not good with obvious Heat copying and that container that is dropped perfectly on the highway just like that ... And why was nothing done with the racing world around Bibi? That seemed more interesting to me personally to develop further.

The film lets it down, but the love drama didn't leave me untouched and the acting was more than strong. What a charismatic actress that Adele Exarchopoulos is...hopefully she plays more movies. I loved the last scene... loyal to his beloved until after her death ... just a shame the fate of Gigi is unclear . Also in Rundskop Roskam showed that finishing is not for him. But still, definitely worth a look.

Reasonable.

The movie starts very strong. It goes fast, yes, but you can. The setting against which the story is set lends itself perfectly to such a rotten sailing. The characters are captivating and although the crime side is not surprising, they still managed to get tension in the film.
But somewhere one loses focus. Bibi gets sick, which gives the film a completely different approach. One where I had a bit of a hard time considering the turnaround from something I was really enjoying at the time. Afterwards there is another turnaround, in which the film moves back to a - literally - dirty crime environment . So it wobbles a bit. I had hoped that the movie would just shoot straight to the end like a racing car, because that's how it got off the grid anyway.

Otherwise, the lead actors do a great job. Matthias Schoenaerts is delighted - and also a bit more human and less closed than in his previous Roskam roles. But he is actually played off the screen by super talent Adèle Exarchopoulos. It's really good, although it's only the 2nd movie I've seen of her.

Michaël Roskam is a good director, but another one where I sometimes miss some focus. Anyway, his films start intriguingly, only to have difficulty maintaining the level afterwards. I hope his next films remain consistent in level and focus. It would be a shame if that wasn't the case.

Le Fidèle does not distinguish itself from many other crime dramas in terms of narrative, but convinces through the strong playing of Schoenaerts and the young Adèle. The latter has the natural charisma of an acting veteran, and the energy needed to respond to Schoenaert's unruly character. Schoenaerts himself plays with unbridled intensity. When the third act of the film examines the boundary between perpetrators and victims, Schoenaerts aptly personifies the gray area between guilt and innocence.

The tragic developments and the metaphors are well on top in that phase, but the cast can't be blamed for that: the screenwriters (in addition to Roskam also Thomas Bidegain and Noé Debré) could have given Gigi's social alienation less conspicuously. The questions that characterize his hopeless journey to redemption (why can't I do what I do? why do some people get away with their actions and others don't?) don't have the impact they might have had in a more subtle scenario.
