No line, no beginning and no end - bobbing for the advanced. Because there is a strong atmosphere, well-played characters that get just enough depth, and despite some carelessness, filmed quite well. On the other hand, also a bit unsatisfactory - the actors and the locations are used sparingly, and there could have been a little more tension in the story. As I believe every Winterbottom film has something good as well as something bad in it, it just depends on which of the two comes through more clearly.

Six months after his wife [Hope Davis] was killed in a car accident involving both his daughters, vein Joe [Colin Firth] decides to move to Genoa where he landed a job at university. Eldest daughter Mary [Perla Haney-Jardine] blames her much younger sister Kelly [Willa Holland] for the accident and tries to tear herself away from her family. Partly because of this, Kelly struggles with a huge and enormous sense of guilt, which manifests itself in severe panic attacks in which she calls for her mother. Joe is torn between his responsibilities as a father and his need for a new relationship.

Excellently directed, well observed, but above all a heartbreaking portrait of a family trying to come to terms with the loss of a family member. Winterbottom's signature documentary-style style heightens the intensity of the lead actors' nuanced performances, including Catherine Keener as Joe's colleague, a long-time friend.

I'm a little less enthusiastic than the reviews above. Not a bad movie, but I was still very hungry. The film just ripples along with no obvious plot. A family loses its mother after a car accident and tries to take life again in sunny Genoa.

The most interesting scenes were the nighttime scenes with the youngest daughter. Her screams from anxiety attacks went through the marrow. Had to do with the character. The fact that she was the direct cause of the accident and therefore the death of her mother is also heartbreaking. And of course, this is also resented by her bigger sister.

Either it was the DVD, but I didn't think the light quality was great. Lots of dark scenes, even in broad daylight between the many alleys or during indoor scenes. Genoa as a location is refreshing and nice to see. The acting was also excellent, sober and solid.

The film as a whole didn't grab me enough except for a scene here and there. I suspect I will soon forget this one.
