Bad all around bad.

Acting performances are worthless and there is no tension in the film at all, making this a painfully long sit to watch the film.

I haven't read the book, it doesn't matter if you have. It's a twist of a movie.

Bad.

The enthusiastic acting by Van der Velde in In Oranje has been completely nullified here. Now he plays downright bad and has been cast incorrectly for his role. At least he tries his best. The rest is actually pretty little and the story is really super cliche.

A movie that you can safely skip. Visually, the film is quite clumsy, the decoration feels unreal and although the locations are nicely chosen, there is a cliche to mock every 10 minutes. We also see Pietje Bel for a while, why is he even in this?

A bad movie, you don't miss anything. You don't miss anything in terms of history and you get a mediocre and fairly boring film for 107 minutes. At least then you hope to mock some action, but even that is quite poorly executed.

Hmm, well, I've read the book half a dozen times, but this is more an interpretation of the story than a movie that really "loose" on its own wings. One of the main reasons for this for me is the fact that I am always distracted by the ridiculous amount of famous actors and actresses who make their appearance here (sometimes only for half a scene, such as Kees Hulst and Jeroen Willems). And if they have a little more time, they often get no further than extremely mediocre acting in which even respectable names such as Hans Dagelet and Michiel Romeyn are carried away (or maybe they are ashamed of their facial hair and wigs: that semi-rasta hair of Daan Schuurmans !). The low point is reached by Hanna Schwamborn as Lavinia, but that could also be due to her dubbing – in that case I nominate Lou Landré, whose roll almost hurts the eyes (and the ears: "No, what a surprise – young men from Dagonaut!"). And because there is so little game that feels natural, the whole film remains somewhat wooden and there is only rarely real "flow", such as with the incidental bright spots of Raymond Thiry as Tiuri senior, Ton Kas as highwayman, Kees Boot as Jaro and Reinier. Noordzij as the vampire-like clerk of whom you do not know until the last whether he is right or wrong.

No, I can't even call this a really good film, and then I don't even compare it with that one trilogy, despite the presence of a ring, a journey, a helper, that map at the beginning... there's a lot to this film: the energy, the pace, the professionalism, the beautiful visuals of costumes, interiors, forests and mountains (and occasional CGI), and of course the fact that the story itself is indestructible. In short, while I'm looking at it I realize that it's just not good enough, but I still enjoy it quite a lot.
